Pink Himalayan salt

You’ve probably noticed, whilst browsing our salt shop, that salts come in many different colours, ranging from the usual white to red and black. 

Himalayan pink salt, however, gets its colour from minerals absorbed from the soil at the foot of the Himalayas. Himalayan pink salt was probably discovered by chance thousands of years ago, but today it is one of the most commonly used seasonings in cooking. 

Himalayan salt is similar in nature to table salt, but also contains mineral impurities. Crystal Pink salt consists of 95–98 per cent sodium chloride, 2–4 per cent polyhalides (potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphur, oxygen, hydrogen), 0.01 per cent fluoride, 0.01 per cent iodine and small amounts of various trace elements.

Can Crystal Pink salt go off or become stale?

No. This salt is completely natural and contains no preservatives or chemicals, which in turn means it has no expiry date, so to speak. 

Indeed, Pink Himalayan salt has existed for millions of years without spoiling and forms natural crystals, so it remains fresh forever. A wonderful gift from nature.

As there is no expiry date, it is incredibly easy to ensure that the pink salt never goes off at home. Moisture is probably the only threat to this salt. As salt naturally absorbs moisture, it can become contaminated if it gets wet, so to avoid this risk, simply store it in an airtight plastic container. As long as the salt is kept dry, there’s no problem at all.

Why is pink salt used on the keto diet?

When reading the recommendations and restrictions of the keto diet, pink salt is often mentioned. Generally, this is because Crystal Pink salt is rich in essential minerals, including calcium and potassium, and is less refined than white salt. Importantly, it helps maintain sodium levels, preventing flu-like symptoms and muscle cramps whilst following a relatively strict diet.

In addition to a healthy and balanced diet, the use of pink salt for weight loss is believed to be beneficial. The *World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research* has previously claimed that pink salt contains up to 84 of the 94 trace elements essential for the body, which help to promote a healthier lifestyle.
